The BCU Paddlepower and star tests are internationally recognised awards that assess paddling skills, safety and leader training.
We are able to offer introductory beginners courses as well training and assesment of the following BCU awards. See the club calendar for more details of specific courses.
The BCU One Star is a flat water award that demonstrates an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills. With the forthcoming opening of the Olympic Slalom course we seem to be getting more interest in our sport. Pure beginners are asking to do 3* courses. Which as most of you know, does take a great deal of time & experience to gain. To this point I am directing them to take part in the following base courses Although they could work with us from the start if they wish, but to get a quick start, then come along & join us to put it into practice
The best way to learn to paddle in the first instance is to do an introduction course, like the one below that is run by Herts Young Mariners Base, Windmill Lane, Cheshunt, Herts EN8 9AJ 01992628403 For further details tel: 01992628403
18 to 90 year olds. No experience necessary or Paddlesport Start. These courses, based on the BCU One Star syllabus, are a great introduction to the fun and excitement of Paddlesport. During the course you will be taught the basic Paddlesport techniques required to paddle a variety of kayaks and canoes.
At the end of the course successful participants will be awarded the BCU 1 Star certificate.
Prebooking is essential. Commencing 7th May through to 16th October-check the club calendar for full details.
The BCU Two Star is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water.
Dates: TBC
BCU Three Star level indicates that candidates can consider themselves an intermediate paddler rather than a beginner. The award is discipline specific with awards in Sea Kayak, Surf, Open Canoe, White Water Kayak, Flat Water Kayak and some of the competitive disciplines.
Foundation Safety and Rescue provides paddlers with key safety and rescue skills to deal with common emergencies in a flat water environment.
Rolling is a useful skill that will give you more confidence in your boat. The club runs rolling courses at an indoor pool. We can then help you transfer this skill outside onto the lake or at a nearby moving water venue.
Special courses for youth groups based on the paddlepower or DofE award scheme can also be arranged. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
